The New York Magic dealt a serious blow to the Washington Freedom Futures on the 4th of July weekend, knocking them out of first place. The match ended 2-0, with the Magic’s Rashidah Sherman scoring in the 26th minute and the 71st minute of play.
The Freedom took twenty-one shots on goal to Magic’s nine. The Magic defense had their work cut out of them trying to contain the Washington forwards.
The first goal of the game was created by Magic’s speedy Rebecca Brown, who worked the ball up the field dribbling and took the initial shot that rebounded off the Washington goalkeeper to the feet of Rashidah Sherman. Sherman made a one-step dribble and took a rocket shot into the upper 90 corner of the net over the head of Balogun for the first Magic goal. Becky Brown’s assist came of the foot of Magic midfielder Aya Noguchi, who has come up big all season in the Magic midfield.
In the 71st minute, defensive midfielder Kelsey Hegg passed to Rashidah Sherman. Sherman proceeded to dribble by three players and release a controlled shot, to the lower corner opposite the keeper, for her second goal.
The Magic defense then held tight for the Magic win. What a 4th of July celebration in the Big Apple.
