Sunday, May 12, 2013

BOYDS, Md. – The Washington Spirit Reserves failed to hold a one-goal lead against the visiting New York Magic, surrendering a pair of goals in final 15 minutes to fall 2-1 on a stormy evening at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Magic forward Brittany Pfaff knocked home the game winner in the 86th minute to doom the Washington W-League side.

Numerous area thunderstorms forced stadium and field closures throughout early Saturday evening, pushing kickoff to 6 p.m. Despite the delay, things could not have started better for the home side Spirit Reserves in the opening minutes of the match. Washington grabbed the early lead in the sixth minute when forward Tiffany Brown turned with the ball in the Magic box and flicked it over to speedy teammate Ashley Herndon. Herndon blasted her shot from close range untouched into the upper part of the New York goal for the 1-0 lead.

The Spirit Reserves peppered New York for much of the first half, outshooting the Magic 10-3. However, Washington was unable to solve the Magic defense to find the net and the half finished with the single-goal lead.

The second half began much like the first, but as time wore on New York found itself creating more and more chances. The Magic had a golden opportunity in the 71st minute, however Washington goalkeeper DiDi Haracic snuffed out the point-blank shot to preserve the slim lead.

The Magic evened things in the 75th minute when forward Brittany Pfaff slotted the ball through the middle for New York substitute Lorena Maggio to finish. Eleven minutes later Pfaff took matters into her own hands to break free near midfield and race in on the Washington goal. Pfaff’s low shot found the back corner of the goal to earn the 2-1 victory for the Magic.

The Spirit Reserves remain home next week to face the Virginia Beach Piranhas on Saturday May 18. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Article from http://wleague.uslsoccer.com/home/718565.html

New York Magic News

July 4, 2010

The New York Magic dealt a serious blow to the Washington Freedom Futures on the 4th of July weekend, knocking them out of first place. The match ended 2-0, with the Magic’s Rashidah Sherman scoring in the 26th minute and the 71st minute of play.

The Freedom took twenty-one shots on goal to Magic’s nine. The Magic defense had their work cut out of them trying to contain the Washington forwards.

The first goal of the game was created by Magic’s speedy Rebecca Brown, who worked the ball up the field dribbling and took the initial shot that rebounded off the Washington goalkeeper to the feet of Rashidah Sherman. Sherman made a one-step dribble and took a rocket shot into the upper 90 corner of the net over the head of Balogun for the first Magic goal. Becky Brown’s assist came of the foot of Magic midfielder Aya Noguchi, who has come up big all season in the Magic midfield.

In the 71st minute, defensive midfielder Kelsey Hegg passed to Rashidah Sherman. Sherman proceeded to dribble by three players and release a controlled shot, to the lower corner opposite the keeper, for her second goal.

The Magic defense then held tight for the Magic win. What a 4th of July celebration in the Big Apple.

Article cited from the USL website:http://wleague.uslsoccer.com/home/445416.html

2010 W-League Honors Announced

USL News Release

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the W-League honors for the 2010 season, naming the Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year. The awards were presented at a banquet at the 2010 W-League Championship Presented by Umbro in Santa Clarita, California. Voting was conducted by W-League coaches and general managers.

Most Valuable Player – Kelly Parker, Buffalo Flash

Parker, who previously captured the W-League MVP in 2004, becomes the first repeat winner in W-League history. It’s hard to argue against the season Parker has enjoyed while leading the Flash to the 2010 W-League title game, which will be televised live at 10 p.m. ET Saturday on FOX Soccer Channel. Parker led the W-League in both goals (11) and points (27) in 2010.

Rookie of the Year – Rashidah Sherman, New York Magic

There wasn’t much doubt about the recipient of the 2010 W-League Rookie of the Year Award. Sherman, who made the Magic a dangerous team to face every night, finished second to Parker in goals and points and was also an MVP finalist.

Defender of the Year – Sue Weber, Long Island Rough Riders

Yet another repeat winner, Weber anchored the Long Island defense this season and added a goal and two assists in the process. An experienced and feared defender with WPS experience, Weber also captured the honor in 2008. A former U.S. U-17 National Team member, Weber was a two-time college All-American at Hofstra University.

Coach of the Year – Hubert Busby, Jr. – Vancouver Whitecaps

It’s not hard to figure out why Busby was selected by his peers as the 2010 W-League Coach of the Year. After posting only three wins in 2009, Busby has the Whitecaps on the verge of a title heading into Saturday night’s W-League Championship against the Buffalo Flash. Included in Vancouver’s impressive season are three wins against the two-time champion Pali Blues and a semifinal upset of the regular season champion Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues.

Goalkeeper of the Year – Alyssa Whitehead, Charlotte Lady Eagle

You can’t argue with the numbers. In 10 games played, Whitehead allowed only four goals while leading Charlotte into the conference playoffs after a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division.

Votes for the Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards are submitted by W-League team management. Rookie of the Year finalists are determined by All-Conference voting, while the Defender of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year are chosen based on total All-Conference votes.
