New York Magic W-League Team Opens 2008 Season with a 2-2 Tie Game

New York Magic 2 - 2 Conn. Passion

The NY Magic played their first game of the 2008 season against a W-League newcomer, the Conn. Passion, on Saturday, May 10 at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.  The Magic held a 2-1 lead until 9 minutes left in the game when the Passion was awarded a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2.

The CFC Passion forward Fortuna Velaj who scored both of her team’s goals pushed the ball into the Magic net at 6 minutes into the first half of the match and the Passion held the lead throughout the first half.   Magic had several chances to score with shots being taken by new Magic strikers, Gemma Davison from Arsenal Ladies FC and Henry Donna-Kay from New York Magic Super-Y team.

The second half of the match changed the tide for the Magic as the Magic team picked up the pace found their rhythm and dominated the Passion.   The first Magic goal, to tie up the game, was scored by, former WUSA player, Robin McCullough (Carolina Courage), off of a beautiful free kick in 59th minute of the game.    The 1-1 tie game remained the same until the 74th  minute when young Magic forward, Donna Kay Henry tapped the ball into the CFC Passion’s net off oa a beautiful assist from Kristen Turner (Siena College).

As the final minutes of the game were winding down in the (81minute), the referee awarded the CFC Passion a penalty kick and tied game with the score of 2-2.

This coming Saturday, May 17, 2008, the Magic W-League team will face off against a local rival, the Long Island Rough Riders, at Michael J. Tully Field.  Gametime is 5PM.  The Magic looks forward to the fans support....come out and cheer on your New...York....Magic!!
